5.85 / concept
The project “5.85”, regards the design of six vacation homes located on the island of Karpathos, Greece. As a main synthetic prosthesis, the interweaving of void and solid, public and private space emerges, aiming at a volume in harmony with the dry and barren natural environment. A monolithic, discrete structure is thus formed, which contains a sequence of enclosed and open spaces, achieving on the one hand an unobstructed view of the sea and on the other hand protecting the open spaces from the winds.
Starting from the backbone of this modular system, from the public path of the composition, the movement is organized through a sequence of transitions from open to closed, from public to private. A public square of the complex is placed in the central part of the volume, serving both to welcome the user and to encourage gathering and sharing. Each dwelling consists of a cube (5.85 x 5.85 x 3.50) that accommodates the basic facilities of a house (living room, kitchen, bedroom and bathroom) and two patios, one facing outwards towards the landscape and the sea and one facing inwards.
